Demolition of old pub

Started by: PeterP (11334)

What was the Strangeway's pub at Hindley now demolished . I know they converted it into flats many years ago. I bet there are a few WW members you used it when it was a pub.

Peter P. They weren't flats they were some sort of office premises, I was a regular there before I got married I had my wedding reception there and was brought up opposite. I also did karaoke there around 2005-6 It was a sad day for me to see it being demolished in the week. Me and my family had some great times in there .

I used to run a cricket knock out for pub teams at Spring View and the Strangeways team was definitely the keenest, and provided several good members of the cricket club.

And a great job of it you did Fossil. At a guess I would say over 40 years ago. Lots of fun but the games were very competitive.

Peterg // You are right they never used as flats , i used to pass it regular but never saw it occupied when it had been converted from a pub .. But in the short term i only passed it yesterday and it was completely gone in fact the gas people were working on site , i wonder if someone or somebody has bought the land to build house's on it . I have to say though when the work had been done converting it from the pub ,i thought they did a good job with it and it looked suitable to live in . Also further along Liverpool road toward's Hindley , the old job centre build where i used to work from many, many years ago is in an absolute terrible state of repair .IT is owned by the gov so you think after all this time it would have been sold to make way for a few house's or something ?? The last time i worked there was when the O/Survey had part of the building shared with job centre and that was in 1981 -1983 in that year although still with O/S i moved to work away ..GB

On your linked map, Hindley and Platt Bridge Station is shown as being at the other side of the road, some 200 metres away from the pub. Not "to the side" of it!

I remember the goods yard and the Strangways pub well having lived down the lump.We used to play in the goods shed .It was a mainly made of wood.Inside there used there was a platform like on a railway station with two mechanical cranes for loading and unloading goods. We used to hang off the cranes while other lads swung you out across the platform. There were also tunnels under the platform which we used to go in,no idea what they were for.At the entrance to the goods yard there was a gate with a sign telling you that could be fined up to forty shillings for trespassing.Just through the gate was a small brick office which I presume was for booking goods in or out. This was always locked but just before it was demolished we went in and it was full of paperwork and ledgers and plenty of stuff that would be collectible today. The Strangeways pub was busy pub and we used to play round down the side in an alley and a place called the little hut, which was just an old outside lavatory I think.I went in a few times for a drink a lot later in life but was not a regular as I had then moved but the area still has lots of happy memories.

Cindy,I knew a lad called Jackie Edwards who I sometimes met when we were fishing or shooting but I think he lived nearer to Platt Bridge but I am sure he had relations near where I lived.I vaguely remember another Edwards family who had a daughter called Nancy. The only other Edwards I knew lived near Charnocks shops on Liverpool Rd and they had a son Jimmy.
